Private Uğur Kantar who died because of heavy torture in the discipline ward while serving in his unit in Northern Cyprus was burried today

Uğur Kantar, a private doing his mandatory military service in his unit died because of arbitrary torture suffered in the discipline ward (sounding like 'disco' when translated into Turkish hence the abbreviation 'DISCO' in military lingo). He had been under treatment in GATA (Gülhane Military Medical Academy) for 2,5 months prior to his death.

The funeral following Friday prayers was attended by the family of the deceased, his relatives, Mustafa Erdoğan who's the brother to the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, AK Party Rize Deputy Nusret Bayraktar and the Mayor of Üsküdar Mustafa Kara.

Soner Kandemir, who was serving in the same unit as him reported that he'd been sent to room confinement by the compnay commander for having had a fight within the company.

According to his statement it seems that Uğur Kantar was subjected to heavy torture while handcuffed to the chair during the confinement. It had also been reported that Kantar was bereft of water while being beaten for about a week.

Family lawyer says thinking that not only the two guardians but also their superiors should be held responsible as well.

There will be a supplemental claim now that Uğur Kantar is dead to the bill of indictment given to the Court on October 6.

The lawyer Bülent Teoman Özkan stated that they are expecting the military court to decide for lack of jurisdiction as this is a crime of torture considered a crime against humanity which should be tried under civil courts.

Father Aydın Kantar stated that the government should take steps to show how this was not an isolated case but this kind of crimes happen systematically. Father had also spoken with Ayhan Sefer Üstün, Chairman to the Commision on human Rights of TGNA (TBMM).
